Anonymous targets terrorists

Anonymous hacking group

The Charlie Hebdo attack in France has now put terrorist groups in the crosshairs of the hacking group Anonymous, as they announced in a YouTube video (English translated version posted above) and on their website in a post entitled Paris Terror Attack: Anonymous To Avenge Charlie Hebdo Shootings, Declares War On Islamist Websites.

Known for going after the government and businesses that they deem violate privacy and free speech, Op Charlie Hebdo is targeting “al Qaeda, the Islamic State and other terrorists” in retaliation for the attacks in France. They have "vowed to shut down terrorist websites and social media accounts promoting terrorism to avenge the brutal murder of Charlie Hebdo journalists."

The video's speaker is wearing the group's familiar Guy Fawkes mask, which it adopted as its symbol, and says in French that Anonymous is “declaring war against you, the terrorists.”

According to Wikipedia, "the Guy Fawkes mask is a stylised depiction of Guy Fawkes, the best-known member of the Gunpowder Plot, an attempt to blow up the House of Lords in London in 1605. A stylised portrayal of a face with an over-sized smile and red cheeks, a wide moustache upturned at both ends, and a thin vertical pointed beard, designed by illustrator David Lloyd, came to represent broader protest after it was used as a major plot element in V for Vendetta, published in 1982, and its 2006 film adaptation. After appearing in Internet forums, the mask became a well-known symbol for the online hacktivist group Anonymous, used in Project Chanology, the Occupy movement, and other anti-government and anti-establishment protests around the world."
